LONDON, May 19: Former Zimbabwe batsman Murray Goodwin scored 59 as Sussex booked a place in the last eight of the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy with a four-wicket victory against Nottinghamshire at Hove on Wednesday. Goodwin put on 103 for the fifth-wicket with Carl Hopkinson (51) to set up a quarterfinal away to Lancashire in English cricket’s knockout one-day competition.
Set just 196 to win, Sussex wobbled at the start of their reply before reaching their target with three overs to spare.
South African Johan van der Wath hit the winning runs in style with a straight six off left-arm spinner Samit Patel.
Elsewhere in English cricket’s knockout one-day competition, holders Gloucestershire lost by three wickets against Surrey at Bristol on Tuesday.
Batting first, Gloucestershire made 230 including 74 from captain Chris Taylor.
But Surrey skipper Mark Ramprakash trumped that with 84 although it needed a composed 62 not out from England all-rounder Rikki Clarke to see the ‘Brown Hats’ home in a tight finish.
In other last-eight fixtures see Surrey at home to southern neighbours Hampshire, Warwickshire up against Kent and Yorkshire facing Northamptonshire.
The quarterfinals will take place on July 15 and 16.
