Tenants threaten retaliation

Published May 20, 2005

OKARA, May 19: The Anjuman-i-Mozareen Punjab has warned the authorities that for every arrested tenant, a policeman will be taken hostage in retaliation, and the release would be reciprocal. After holding a largely attended meeting of the tenants of the Military Farms villages in 4/4L village, AMP leader Abdul Sattar Chaman told Dawn on telephone that it was decided that the body would be compelled to take retaliatory step if the authorities continued arresting tenants.

Mr Chaman said the so-called tenants’ delegation scheduled to meet Defence Minister Rao Sikander Iqbal on May 21 were not representatives of the AMP, so the meeting was insignificant.

Meanwhile, the acting DPO, when contacted, said that such statements were tantamount to challenging the writ of the government and added that so far the police had not arrested any innocent tenant. The tenants involved in cases and other miscreants would be dealt strictly and no one would be allowed to violate the law, he said.

It is also learnt that a group of tenants tried on Wednesday evening to block the GT Road, but were dispersed by the police.

The law-enforcing agencies continued patrolling the troubled spots to prevent any untoward incident.

IMPRISONMENT: Special Judge, Anti-Corruption, has awarded three-year imprisonment and Rs40,000 fine to an ASI, Sabir, in a fraud case.
