Patrol police first batch passes out

By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, May 19: Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi said here on Thursday the government was committed to protecting the lives and properties of people, and the police patrol force would play a pivotal role in this regard. Speaking at the first passing out parade of the police patrol force at the Chuhng Police Training School here, he said the government had decided to widen the scope of the patrol posts system across the province and all the necessary resources would be provided for this purpose.

He said the government would spend Rs7.5 billion on the project during the next two years. Modern ambulances would also be made available as a part of the system, he added.

The chief minister said all jawans of the force were recruited purely on merit and it was hoped that they would also uphold merit in their professional life.

He said as a society had all types of men, the police force, too, had good and bad elements. He, however, said he desired to see the police department improving its reputation.

Pervaiz Elahi appreciated the role of the Punjab police in the arrest of the elements involved in sectarian violence. He said the police should adopt a courteous behaviour with the law-abiding citizens, as it would go a long way towards restoring the confidence of the people in the police force.

He said the patrol force would also keep an eye on the movement of criminals between different cities. It would, therefore, not be possible for the hardened criminals to freely move from one place to another.

The chief minister said the patrol posts would also serve as crime reporting centres where anti-social elements would be detained for 48 hours after their arrest. They would, later, be handed over to the police station concerned after completion of initial proceedings.

Besides, he said, the patrol posts would also draw a map of the scene of the crime and the daily performance report of this force would be sent to him through the home department.

He said the record of every crime would be available in the computer of the home department and the cases against criminals would be effectively pursued till the end.
