Fayaz, Pervaiz triumph

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, May 17: Fayaz Choudhry and Pervaiz Toor from Lahore, taught their Karachi opponents Salman Rizvi and Arif Anis a tennis lesson, breezing into the executive doubles quarterfinals 6-1, 6-0, under floodlights, on the second day in the tennis championship played before a large audience at the Karachi Gymkhana hard courts.

Attacking from both flanks, Fayaz and Pervaiz often caught their hapless opponents on the wrong foot time and again picking up the first set 6-1. Getting more ruthless in the next, the Lahore pair smashing everything in sight, won the next set and the match without conceding a point.

In another match played, Major Zia and Liaq Pirzada from Multan had to break into a sweat before overcoming their opponents from Lahore, Syed Qutubuddin and Babar 6-4, 6-4, to book their berth into the quarterfinal round.

In a match filled with thrills and spills, Anisur Rehman and Haji Younus Dada beat Ronnie Dubash and Jafar Hasan in three sets 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.

Anis and Haji combining well forced their opponents into several errors, winning the first set 6-2. But is was a different ball game altogether in the second set.

Ronnie using his height and powerful serves for good measure, backed up splendidly by Jafar, grabbed the second set 6-0 to equalize the set scores 1-1, before a stunned bunch of spectators.

Unfortunately, Ronnie and Jafar could not maintain the winning tempo. Committing unforeseen errors into the net time and again, Ronnie and Jafar were trailing 1-5 and all seemed over bar the shouting. But in a last ditch effort, the pair clawed their way back into contention 4-5, before Anis cashing in on his service, won the day for himself and Haji, as Ronnie and Jafar were forced out of the tournament, going down in the final set 6-4.

The local pair of Jamil Ahmed and Kawaja Masroor proved to be just too strong for Faisal and Asfandyar Minwalla, sailing into the next round with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. In an Executive singles encounter, Hamidul Haq, who had just flown in from Islamabad two hours before he was to proceed on court, had to battle hard before overcoming the stiff challenge from Masood Hashmi 6-3, 6-2.

Matches on the third day will continue on Wednesday from 6.00 p.m. Following were the results: Executive singles (pre-quarterfinals) Hamidul Haq (Islamabad) bt Masood Hashmi 6-3, 6-2. Executive doubles (pre-quarterfinals)
