LONDON, May 16: Pace bowler Jonathan Lewis looks set to make his Test debut against Bangladesh after Simon Jones suffered a recurrence to a back injury on Monday. Jones was able to play on Sunday but he has been ruled out of his county side Glamorgan’s one day match with Essex on Tuesday.
Lewis now looks set to make his debut at Lord’s on May 26 while England may send for more bowling cover in case of any further injuries.
Jones, 26, has had a career blighted with injury, most notably suffering cruciate ligament damage in his knee at the start of England’s 2002-03 Ashes tour.
It kept him out of serious cricket for a year, and he did not feature for England again until the spring 2004 tour of West Indies.
Uncapped Gloucestershire seamer Lewis, 29, was called up as late cover during the South Africa tour and, has been chosen in the squad for the Bangladesh test ahead of regular ‘back-up’ paceman James Anderson.
England won both their previous two Tests against the Asian minnows in Bangladesh during the 2003-04 season.
Squad: Michael Vaughan (captain), Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss, Graham Thorpe, Ian Bell, Andrew Flintoff, Geraint Jones (wicketkeeper), Ashley Giles, Matthew Hoggard, Steve Harmison, Simon Jones, Jon Lewis.—Agencies
