Proposal for Youth Games discussed

By Our Sports Reporter

ISLAMABAD, May 16: Minister of State M Ali Durrani and Brig Arif Mahmud Siddiqui, director general of Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) on Monday discussed the proposed Youth Games and the National Sports Strategy. PSB chief told Dawn that the meeting focussed on the Games which are planned to be organised at the tehsil, district and national levels.

“The idea is to stage the National Games one year and the Youth Games during the next.”

To begin with it has been proposed that competitions at the tehsil level have eight sports. “The winning teams and athletes at each tier will be awarded cash prizes.”

Approximately a sum of Rs35 million is being sought from the government and once the money is released, the Games will be organised. “At the national level we will have competitions keeping in mind sports that have medal prospects.”

The meeting however could not agree on the formation of an implementation committee for the National Sports Strategy that is awaiting the Cabinet’s approval.
