KARACHI, May 16: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has strongly condemned the police action against rights activists in Lahore on Saturday and expressed concern over the rising trend of use of police force on peaceful rallies. PFUJ president Pervaiz Shoukat and secretary-general Mazhar Abbas in a joint statement said the arrest of activists of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) like Asma Jehangir, Iqbal Haider and Hina Jilani was disgraceful. If some people had the right to oppose women’s participation in marathons along with men, others had a right to oppose those who were against such races.
The PFUJ said police had acted in a similar manner against peaceful rallies of journalists on International Press Freedom Day in Lahore and Islamabad on May 3, 2005.
