Kidnapped complainant still missing: Convict’s execution today
GUJRANWALA, May 16: Baghbanpura police failed to recover the complainant in a murder case who was kidnapped by the family of convict, scheduled to be hanged on Tuesday (today), about a week ago. The kidnappers had threatened that they would kill Rafiq if the convict was hanged.
Convict Arshad of Thattha Rao village, Kot Ladha, killed his rival Rashid over an old enmity in 1994. Rafiq Gujjar, an uncle of district bar member Muhammad Rafi, was the complainant and pursued the case. Arshad was convicted in 1996 and sentenced to death and all his appeals were rejected.
When the court issued his death warrant, his men reportedly kidnapped Rafiq and took him to an undisclosed place and compelled him to compromise and pardon the killer.
Rafiq’s family urged the police high-up to recover him while the district bar also adopted a resolution demanding early recovery of the kidnapped man.
Meanwhile, Baghbanpura police said raids were being conducted to recover the kidnapped man.
CRACKDOWN: A crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles will soon be launched throughout the province to check the environmental pollution.
This was stated by Punjab Transport Minister Rana Shamshad Ahmad Khan while speaking at a transport committee meeting here.
The minister said the government was making efforts to provide better transport facilities to passengers.
He said the government wanted to convert the public transport into CNG.
He warned the people that vehicles emitting smoke would be impounded if brought on the road.
The District Coordination Officer and other senior officers were also present on the occasion.
