KARACHI, May 16: The Sindh High Court on Monday ordered the production of a married woman declared ‘kari’ by a tribal jirga in Jacobabad. Petitioner Shahid Mustafa stated in his petition moved through Advocate Zia Ahmed Awan that his wife, Imam Khatoon, was declared ‘kari’ by the jirga and handed over to her father, Amanullah Soomro, with their son. He said his wife and son were since being held in captivity by his father-in-law, who was opposed to their marriage.
He was not being allowed to see his wife or son. Respondent Soomro appeared in response to a court notice on Monday but submitted that the alleged detainees were not in his custody. He said he was unable to produce the two detainees as he was not aware of their whereabouts.
Justice Mohammad Afzal Soomro, who is hearing the petition, directed the police authorities to trace and produce the allegedly detained woman and her son on June 3. He also asked Soomro to ascertain their whereabouts and appear on the next date.
OFFICIAL SUMMONED: Justice Amir Hani Muslim issued a notice to the city government’s director for local taxes for May 26 in a contempt application alleging that he and his colleagues dismantled and smashed hoardings put up by an outdoor advertiser pending hearing of his suit.
M/s Vision Publicity submitted in their application that they were old licensees of the CDGK and its predecessors for outdoor publicity. They instituted a suit against the CDG when it decided to auction the publicity sites in the presence of licensees, who could not be ignored.
By an interim order, the plaintiffs said, the court had ordered the CDGK to properly and strictly regulate the display of billboards obstructing the smooth flow of traffic and offending against the aesthetic sense. Under cover of the court order, the CDGK officials dismantled the plaintiffs’ billboards.
CDGK counsel Manzoor Ahmed said the respondent officials had only removed the hoardings found violative of the court order. The order has, meanwhile, been challenged on other grounds, he said.
NOTICE TO PTCL: A division bench comprising Justices Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Azizullah M. Memon asked the PTCL to furnish the result of the exam conducted by the corporation for promotion of its serving employees as engineering supervisors.
Petitioner Mukhtar Ahmed and others stated through Advocate Muzaffarul Haq that 50 per cents of the supervisors’ posts were reserved for the serving PTCL employees.
The corporation conducted a departmental exam in October 2004 but no employee who appeared in the test had been promoted so far. Directing the PTCL to furnish a copy of the promotion exam result, the bench adjourned further hearing to May 30.
