Kent tail denies Hants top spot


LONDON, May 15: Hampshire missed out on the chance on Saturday to go top of the County Championship First Division after Kent’s last wicket pair held out for a draw at Canterbury. Set 485 to win, Kent were in dire straits at 380 for eight with more than two hours left on the final day of four.

However, tailenders Min Patel and Simon Cook kept Hampshire at bay, Kent passing 400, before Cook was bowled by leg-spin legend Shane Warne for 37.

At Canterbury: Kent (10pts) drew with Hampshire (10pts). Hampshire 328 (S.M. Warne 107 not out, S.M. Katich 56) and 461-9 declared (S.M. Katich 128, K.P. Pietersen 125, S.M. Ervine 57, M.J. At The Oval: Surrey (22pts) beat Glamorgan (6pts) by 276 runs. Surrey 444 (A.D. Brown 122, S.A. Newman 117, R. Clarke 84, J.G.E. Benning 57) and 425-4 declared (S.A. Newman 219, M.R. Ramprakash 97); Glamorgan 345 (D.S. Harrison 75 not out; M.P. Bicknell 6-74) and 248 (D.L. Hemp 95, M.J. Powell 93; Mohammad Akram 4-63).
