KARACHI, May 15: Promising teenager Nasir Mushtaq, excelling with his fierce ground strokes and powerful service, picked up the boys under-15 title after he bludgeoned his best friend Ghulam Abbas Panju in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, in the KC Summer National tennis championship played on Sunday on the hard courts of the Karachi Club.

Displaying immense power not to mention talent, this youngster who always sports a smile on his face whether in victory or defeat, never gave Ghulam a ghost of a chance of getting back into the game as he sent down winner after winner, reducing his hapless opponent to a mere passenger.

These two have played against each other many a time in past tournaments, also teaming up to be doubles partners, but sadly Ghulam had met Nasir at has very best on Sunday and has absolutely no answer to the powerful youngster’s onslaughts.

Mushtaq has indeed a bright future ahead of him, not afraid at all to meet opponents much older than himself in the boys under-17 and men’s singles, often giving a good account of himself in singles and doubles events.

Without a shadow of doubt, this is a lad for the future for Pakistan tennis and should now be taken in the hands of the Sindh Tennis Association, before he feels neglected and disappears in the wilderness like many talented players before him in the past.

There was indeed a shock in store in the ladies singles when Sara Mehboob, not afraid to play attacking tennis, downed the top seed Sana Bhagat 6-4, 6-1.

After winning a first close set 6-4, it was Sara all the way in the next, with Sana surrendering rather meekly 6-1.

Yasir Khan, the youngest brother of Aqeel, seemed determined to follow in his brother’s footsteps, when he beat another talented youngster from Lahore, Tanvir Ashiq 6-3, 6-3, in the boys under-17 final.

Young Sunny Williams was a picture of happiness in the boys under-13 event, beating the fancied Zohair Raza 6-2, 7-5. After winning the first set rather easily 6-2, Sunny had to bring out his best as Zohair matched him stroke for stroke, before surrendering the next set also 5-7. In the men’s singles semifinal, Aqeel Khan beat his younger brother Jalil, in an exciting encounter 6-3, 7-5 and will now take on Asim Shafiq in the final on Monday evening at 4.00 p.m.
