Fancied Brummell bags Midas Cup

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, May 15: Three-year-old bay English colt, Brummell, lived up to his favourite status, scoring an easy victory to bag the Midas Cup run over 2000m during the Lahore Summer Meeting held at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The 80 to 100 favourite Brummell ridden by jockey M. Hanif came from fourth position and collared front runners in the straight and went on to win easily. He beat Laser Lass by eight lengths.

Tora Bora finished third, one and a quarter length further back while Lucky Winner after leading for over 1200m lost his stamina and could hardly complete the frame, another seven lengths behind.

Owned by Mian Mohammad Ashraf, Brummell (Polish Precedent-Fashion) was trained privately by Rashid Latif. This was the seventh event of the day, a class I, II and III combined handicap race.

Four-year-old bay English filly, Tortuette, put up a grand performance to triumph in the supporting and sixth event in the Mekran Plate class IV division I contested over 1400m.

The two to one Tortuette beat fancied Calendar Girl by three-fourth of a length with Dixie Queen and Gortalocha completing the frame.

The winner was given a calculated ride by Azhar Hussain. Azhar stole the limelight of the Sunday’s racing when he rode home three winners.

He first strode to victory long shot Lucky Credit Queen in the opener.

He then followed it by bringing home two to one Tortuette in the sixth race.

He completed his treble by storming home on Sohna Malook in the eighth and last race.
