Savabeel romps home to 3rd successive win

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, May 15: Murtaza Hussain’s three-year-old bay filly Savabeel having the services of A. Aziz in the saddle, romped home to her third successive victory, beating Messrs. Faisal Farooq’s and Ghazanfar Hussain’s throughbred bay filly Summer Wine by ¾ of a length at the Winter Gymkhana Race Meeting on Sunday at the Karachi Racecourse.

Although the verdict of victory was only by ¾ of a length, let this result not fool you. Savabeel lying second behind Summer Wine turning for home, suddenly came thundering in with giant strides and after overtaking Summer Wine half a furlong from the winning post, eased up with the race already in the bag.

Another impressive winner on Sunday was the bay horse Safeena-e-Arab who was piloted home to victory in the concluding event by former champion jockey Ghulam Shabbir II, collaring the chestnut colt Killer Instincts in the home stretch, after trying runaway tactics under riding boy Arif Nazir.

Wonder Thunder edged out Aie Bahar for the third spot, ending her winning sequence, after the thoroughbred bay filly registered six victories on the trot.

In the opener, as mentioned in these columns, National Lining hacked the entire field sprinting home to victory, beating nearest rival Hat’s Off by five lengths with Super Time and Silver Sweet completing the frame.

After Tom Cruise was withdrawn from the second event, Cool Water with A. Aziz in the saddle, came flying in from behind to edge out Jaguar and Sea Biscuit near the winning post after the two were engaged in a keen tussle in the home stretch to win the race.

In a small field of eight runners, Syed Ali Gohar Shah’s bay colt Canon Ball ridden by evergreen S. Khan, never gave the supporters any anxious moments, winning the third race from Tag Team by four and half lengths, with Azam The Great beating Raaz for the third spot.

In the following race, Hazoom, a thoroughbred four-year-old dark filly, won the fourth race in a start to finish bid, chased all the way over the five furlong journey by Silver City and Welcome Pachino, after Free Spirit was satisfied to complete the frame in the fourth race.

Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro VII’s highly bred chestnut filly Patricia, caused quite an upset in the fifth event, galloping to victory with riding boy Mohammad Essa astride, upsetting Arab Hi Arab and the favourite Leopard in the next race on the afternoon’s card.

The seventh race was bagged by the thoroughbred Birjul-ul-Arab and the roan horse had absolutely no opposition sprinting home to victory, followed by stable companion Noor-e-Arab, Penny and Muskaan in a field of 11 runners.

The concluding event was picked up by Safeena-e-Arab piloted home by Ghulam Shabbir II, ending the pretensions of Killer Instincts and Wonder Thunder with Aie Bahar on course for a seventh straight victory finishing fourth.

Jockey A. Aziz had the distinction of finishing off the afternoon’s programme with a splendid double through Cool Water in the second event and Savabeel in the sixth.

The same could be said about trainer Ghulam Channa who had his double triumph through Birj-ul-Arab and Safeena-e-Arab.
