Ghulam topples top seed Waqas to reach final

KARACHI, May 14: Bespectacled Ghulam Abbas Panju, a youngster from the Karachi Grammar School, forced his way into the final of the Boys under-15 final, toppling the top seed Waqas Malik in three sets 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

After he was all at sea against Waqas in the first set which he lost 6-1, Ghulam displaying great fighting abilities staged a remarkable recovery to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-2, with the spectators giving him a loud cheer.

Earlier, Ghulam beat Mustafa Jamali 6-4, 6-2 and Waqas got the better of Zohair Raza in an exciting 6-4, 6-3 triumph. Ghulam will now take on his very good friend Nasir Mushtaq in the final to played on Sunday.

Nasir excelling with powerful serves and ground strokes breezed past Amir Darvesh. In the men’s singles quarterfinals, top seed Aqeel Khan beat Shahid Afridi 6-2, 6-0 and Asim Shafiq accounted for Shehzad Khan 6-4, 6-4.

Earlier, in their quarterfinal, Aqeel beat Inam Gul 6-3, 6-3, while his younger brother had to break into a sweat in overcoming the Pakistan Davis Cup skipper Rashid Malik 6-4, 4-6, 3-0 retired.

In the men’s doubles unseeded lefthander Adnan Khan and Khalid Ali Nazar created another upset beating third seed Nomi Qamar and Mohammad Shafiq 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to reach the final.

They will now take on the top seeds Asim Shafiq and Shehzad Khan who beat Arif Raja and Rashid Malik 2-1 after Rashid injured himself.

In the boys under-17 semifinals, Yasir Khan had to bring out his best in overcoming the gallant effort of Omer Baber 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and Tanvir Ashiq beat Khurram Nasir 7-5, 6-2.

Sunny Williams reached the final of the boys under-13 beating Omer Shahid 6-4, 6-0 and will now take on Zohair Raza, who disposed off Vicky Kumar 6-0, 6-0 in the other semifinal.

Sara Mehboob reached the Ladies final beating Sehar Khwaja 6-3, 6-3 and will take on top seed Sana Bhagat in the final on Sunday. Sana got a walkover against Nabila Haq.

Quaterfinals Jalil Khan bt Rashid Malik 6-4, 4-6, 3-0 (retired). Aqeel Khan bt Inam Gul 6-3, 6-3. Semifinals Asim Shafiq t Shehzad Khan 6-4, 6-4.

Boys under-17 singles semifinals

Yasir Khan bt Omer Baber 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Tanvir Ashiq bt Kamran Nazir 7-5, 6-2.
