ISLAMABAD, May 14: The Senate standing committee on narcotics control has observed that the large-scale cultivation of opium/poppy and production and trafficking of opium and heroin in Afghanistan posed a major threat to the Pakistani youth and society.

In a meeting presided over by Senator Kalsoom Parveen on Saturday, the committee said the national strategy on drug interdiction must envisage active and effective cooperation from law-enforcement agencies as the Anti-Narcotics Force was thinly spread because of its limited numerical strength.

The committee made these observation during a briefing on the schemes for elimination of poppy and the efforts being made to check the spread of narcotics. —Our Reporter
