SANGHAR, May 14: Chairmen and office-bearers of many farmers’ organizations have informed irrigation officials in writing that they are unable to collect water tax from landlords. They said the landlords had refused to pay the water tax. They said millions of rupees were outstanding against them.

Formers’ organizations, formed under the Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority, are assigned to collect water tax from farmers.

The organizations have to deposit 60 per cent of the collected amount in the government treasury and keep the remaining amount for carrying out repairs of water channels.

At many places, the water tax collected was allegedly misappropriated while different branches and channels remained closed for several days for non-payment of dues by farmers.

SPLA: About 70 members of the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association, out of a total 103, in a joint statement have expressed no-confidence in the district body of the SPLA.

They accused the district body of inefficiency, incompetence and working against interests of the association and education.

The members included Save SPLA Forum secretary Mohammad Siddiq Unnar.
