By Our Correspondent

SUKKUR, May 14: Sindh Prisons Inspector-General Ayaz Mughni has suspended eight officials of the Sukkur Central Jail and banned their entry into the jail premises.Talking to journalists here on Saturday, he also ordered an inquiry into the jail incident. He directed the inquiry officer, Sindh Prisons DIG Ghulam Hussain Khoso, to submit him a report in seven days.

He said action would be taken against officials concerned after the inquiry.

On Friday evening, the prisons chief met inmates of the central jail and heard their grievances after which he suspended the eight officials, including four policemen, two senior officers and a warden of the jail.

He said he had not disclosed names of all suspended officials because some of them might prove to be innocent. He added that everything would be clear after completion of the inquiry.

He said 10 officials, including the suspended officials, had been banned entry into the prison premises.

Mr Mughni said items collected from prisoners during search operations would be returned to them if found according to the jail manual.

He said television sets had been provided in all barracks, good quality food was being provided to prisoners and no labour would be taken from temporary prisoners. The prisons IG said it had been decided not to register a case of the incident because it was not clear as yet who started the disturbance.

He said some 1,000 inmates in Sindh were involved in drug business and efforts were being made to eliminate this menace.
