Shahzad sends second seed Nomi packing

KARACHI, May 13: Sixth Shahzad Khan from Faisalabad caused the biggest upset to date, sending second seed Nomi Qamar packing, in the KC National Summer tennis championship played on Friday evening on the hard courts of the Karachi Club.

After winning the first set 6-2, Shahzad silenced Nomi’s supporters, proving to all that his first set victory was no flash in the pan, winning the next set also 6-4.

Left-handed teenager Adnan Khan who caused an uproar on Thursday evening, met his Waterloo at the hands of top seed Asim Shafiq 6-2, 6-0.

Earlier in the morning session pre-quarterfinals, Peshawar’s seventh seed Inam Gul shut out the entry of Lahore’s Tanvir Munir 6-1, 6-3, while Rashid Malik (Lahore) disposed off Mehmood Khan 7-6, 6-3.

In the boys under-17, Nasir Mushtaq almost pulled off another upset before going down to Yasir Khan 7-5, 6-2, 6-2, while Omer Baber sailed into the semifinal, beating S.M. Abbas Raza 6-3, 6-2.

Also moving into the last four were fourth seed Khurram Nazir a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Salman Aslam (Lahore) and second seed Tanvir Ashiq, who beat counterpart Fahad Ali 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Nasir Mushtaq however reached the semifinals in the under-15 event beating Peshawar’s Hidayatullah 6-3, 6-3. He was joined by top seed Waqas Malik, who outpointed Niaz Hussain 6-2, 6-1.

Seventh seed Amir Darwesh was a surprise 7-5, 6-0 winner over fourth seed Sunny Williams and Zuhair Reza beat Omar Shahid 6-2, 6-0.

Zohair Raza and Omer Shahid both reached the semifinal round in the boys under-13 event beating Manoj Kumar 6-2, 6-0 and Adil Kohri 6-3, 6-1 respectively.

Adnan Khan and Khalid Ali Nazar continued on their winning ways in the Men’s doubles event, shutting off another formidable pair of Tanvir Ashiq and Munir Ashiq 6-3, 6-2.

Also movinginto thesemifinals werfe Nomi Qamar and M. Shafiq beating Asad Bhagat and Shahid Khan 6-2, 6-1 and the Lahore pair of Asif Raja and Rashid Malik who cut short the winning sequence of Peshawar’s Irfanullah and Jehanzeb.

The ladies singles event also entered into the semifinal rounds. Nabila Haq got the better of Zarmeen Shoaib 7-5,6-4. Sara Mehboob coasted past Aley Zehra 6-1, 6-1 and Sehar Khwaja a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Quratil Ain.

Boys under-17 (quarterfinals) Khurram Nazir (Lahore) bt Salman Aslam (Lahore) 6-0, 6-2. Tanvir Ashiq (Lahore) bt Fahad Ali (Lahore) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Yasir Khan (Karachi bt Nasir Mushtaq (Karachi) 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
