Zubair scores upset victory

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, May 13: Zubair pulled off an upset victory over light-flyweight Mohammad Nisar of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) to help KESC finish the opening day of national junior boxing championship as one of the dominant sides on Friday.

Nisar, an Asian cadet champion featuring in the junior event for the first time, was on defensive from the first bell, chiefly because of Zubair’s better reach at KPT Sports Complex.

After remaining on back foot, it was only in the fourth round that Nisar showed his resilience which resulted in eight mandatory counts for Zubair. But better display in the earlier three rounds by Zubair gave him a close 17-15 victory.

Although Nisar crashed out of the competition, KPT were among the dominating teams as four of their pugilists along with KESC, Wapda and Sindh, reached the semifinals.

Light-welterweight Mohammad Fayyaz was the second KPT boxer who was sent packing as referee stopped the contest (RSC) after he was injured in the third round against Shoaib Baloch of Sindh.

KPT’s international lightweight Karrar Hussain had smooth sailing over Punjab’s Ghulam Murtaza who could not face the ferocity of punches and retired in the opening round.

Flyweight Mohammad Ali of KPT thrashed Sindh’s Naveed Zafar 22-12, featherweight Sheeraz emerged a 26-14 winner against Munir Ahmad of Sindh, while fourth KPT boxer to join last four was welterweight Jan Mohammad who defeated Punjab’s Noman Khan 17-6.

Apart from Zubair, KESC’s flyweight Aneel Hussain qualified for the last four after a 23-8 triumph, while his team-mate bantamweight Akbar Ali was 14-8 victor against Pakistan Navy’s Aftab Ahmad, and featherweight Rauf defeated NWFP’s Saeedullah on a RSC verdict in his favour.

Wapda’s flyweight Liaquat Ali, featherweight Mohammad Tariq, light-welterweight Kaleemullah and welterweight Mohammad Amir made it to the semifinals, while for Sindh, light-flyweight Jibran Muna, lightweight Sajjad Qambrani, and middleweight Nadir Khan also reached the semis.
