Denmark upset South Korea

BEIJING, May 12: China continued their domination of the Sudirman Cup on Thursday beating Indonesia 5-0 for a third straight sweep and a revenge match against holders South Korea in Saturday’s semi-finals. A determined Denmark took a 3-2 victory over the Koreans, who upset China at the last cup in 2003, to earn a semifinal meeting with Indonesia.

Chinese men’s ace Lin Dan had to fight hard against Sony Dwi Kuncoro for a 17-14 15-10 victory, but China’s top woman Xie Xingfang had little trouble on the way to her 11-5 11-0 win.

Mixed duo Zhang Jun and Gao Ling faced a challenge against the unexpected Indonesian pairing of Flandy Limpele and Yunita Tetty, but regained form after losing the first game and put on a display of power badminton in the third for a 2-1 win.

Women’s doubles team Huang Sui and Gao Ling sealed the sweep with a crushing 15-1 15-4 victory. Denmark’s Peter Gade came back after going a game down to defeat Korean Lee Hyun-il 2-1.

The Danish team’s fortunes turned in the second event when Tine Rasmussen’s left Achilles tendon snapped, forcing her to abandon her match with Seo Yoon-hee.

The Danes held out for the victory thanks to strong performances from men’s pair Lars Paaske and Jonas Rasmussen and mixed duo Jens Eriksen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl, each winning 2-0.—Reuters
