Sarfraz urges PCB chief to quit
ISLAMABAD, May 12: Former Test pace bowler Sarfraz Nawaz has asked the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Shaharyar M. Khan to resign as he had failed to present the PCB’s constitution before the Senate Standing Committee on Sports.
In a recent meeting, Shaharyar assured that he would submit the constitution before the Senate Standing Committee on Sports by April 30.
In case of failure to present it by April 30, he offered to resign from his post.
“Now it’s May 12 and PCB constitution is still in draft process. Shaharyar should resign from the office of PCB chairman,” Sarfraz demanded.
He said PCB was the biggest sporting body of the country and delay of its constitution for the last many years was proof that the current PCB chiefs were incompetent and were not able to run the cricketing affairs of the country.
The Senate Standing Committee on Sports in its meeting with PCB officials on Wednesday also expressed its concern over the delay in preparing the draft constitution for PCB despite the fact that the board had earlier given a categorical assurance that constitution would be ready by April 30, 2005.
Meanwhile, PCB officials in the meeting once again assured the Senate Committee that the constitution would be presented after May 22.
“I assure you that they (PCB officials) will not be able to present the constitution in the given time period as they want to hide the salient features from Senate Standing Committee,” Sarfraz said.
“According to reports I received, Shaharyar doesn’t want to present the constitution before the Senate Committee and will submit it directly to President Pervez Musharraf, the PCB Patron, for final approval as after his (President’s) approval no changes could be made in the constitution.”
It is worth mentioning here that with the implementation of the new PCB constitution the present ad hoc set-up of PCB, including the ad hoc committee and the Advisory Council, would cease to function.
“Once the constitution is finalized by Justice Karamat Nazir Bhandari and his members it will be sent to the Law Ministry and the President for approval and hopefully it could be implemented in June or July,” Shaharyar stated recently.
The PCB chief also said that he was not keen on remaining chairman forever.
“I was given a responsibility and I am trying to do my job honestly. I can not say whether I would be contesting for the post of chairman or not,” he added.
