Madeeha and Imran best athletes

LAHORE, May 11: Punjab athletes proved their supremacy claiming both the titles of boys and girls in the first Under-17 Inter-provincial athletics championship by 113 and 119 points at Punjab Stadium on Wednesday. Punjab’s Madeeha Latif and Imran Ghafoor were declared best athletes of the meet. NWFP boys obtained 45 points to earn second place followed by Sindh (43).

Islamabad girls secured 63 points to grab second position while the NWFP (35) remained third. Punjab clinched all the four gold medals - two boys and two girls’ to make a clean sweep.

In the boys 800m race, Ali Mohammad clocked one minute 57.47 second to claim gold. Punjab’s Khalid Mehmood and Abdullah of Sindh earned silver and bronze.

In 100m, Imran Ghafoor covered the distance in 11.21 seconds to emerge winner. Samar Abbas of Punjab and Asif Javed of NWFP had to be content with silver and bronze.

Punjab’s Azalfa Shafa clocked two minutes 33.70 seconds to win the 800m race while Sitara Murtaza also of Punjab and Islamabad’s Yasmin bagged silver and bronze medals.

Madeeha gave Punjab another gold clocking 14.01 seconds to win 100m race. Sindh’s Muzammil Ilyas and Saima Bibi of NWFP claimed silver and bronze medals.

Madeeha would represent the country in the World Youth Athletics in Morocco this year.
