Govt scared of MMA: Fazl

HARIPUR, May 11: Opposition leader in the National Assembly Maulana Fazlur Rehman has accused the government of delaying the local government elections out of fear that MMA candidates would emerge victorious across the country.

Fazlur Rehman also declared that his six-party grouping was in a state of preparedness “not only for the LB polls but also for the next general elections”. The opposition leader was speaking at a public gathering here on Tuesday.

He claimed that the government was “afraid of the expected return of mullas in the local government elections” and that is why it had delayed the polls. In his opinion the performance of MMA was such that its candidates deserved to be elected. “We are struggling for the rights of people and constitution,” he said, referring to steps like substantial enhancement in education sector allocation, proposals for free education and the first women’s university. According to him, the provincial government has a “very impressive record of development” as compared to the three other provinces, despite the suspension of aid from the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and other donor agencies.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman lambasted the federal government for its failure to provide relief to the people, adding that there was no let-up in the price hike, nor improvement in the unemployment situation.

His remarks came as Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz was preparing to present the sixth national budget. Fazlur Rehman also used the opportunity to publicly criticise President Gen Musharraf, saying that he dissolved parliament by violating his oath as a soldier and that he had murdered democracy in the country, and yet he claimed to be an enlightened person.—Correspondent
