KARACHI: Road project launched in Metroville

KARACHI, May 11: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan on Tuesday night laid the foundation stone of Shahrah-i-Metroville II. Speaking on the occasion, he said that to improve the water supply situation a deal would be inked with two foreign companies for setting up two desalination plants in the city, each with the capacity of 50 million gallons per day.

He said that comprehensive steps were being taken on priority basis to wipe out the water shortage issue in the city. He said that an accord had already been inked with a US company to set up two desalination plants, each with the capacity of 25 million gallons per day. He said that the work on these plants would be initiated next week.

The city nazim said that the K-III project would be completed by June 2006. Planning for launching the K-IV project, after the completion of the K-3, had already been completed, he said.

Mr Khan said that the city government had nearly completed construction of all major city roads and the construction of roads in peripheral areas of the city had been launched. Besides, he said that work on 20 major roads, including Shahrah-i-Orangi in Baldia and six roads in Lyari, was in progress. He said that the construction of the Shahrah-i-Metroville II was an old demand of area residents and it would be completed in nine months. However, he asked the contractor to complete the road project in five months instead of stipulated nine months.

The nazim said that he had ordered the road engineers that all road projects should be completed in time so that the citizens could be saved from hardships. He also instructed the concerned departments and officials to ensure alternate routes for the all roads under construction.

He asked that the lifting of road debris should be ensured and the alternate roads should be free from mud heaps or potholes. He said that smooth flow of traffic on these alternate roads should be ensured and all kinds of blockades should be removed.

He said that the city government was making sincere efforts to solve the problems of water, sewerage, transport, education and health. These efforts were bearing fruit now, he said, adding that the continuous progress and uplift of the city demands an honest and responsible leadership in future too.

Niamatullah Khan said that he wanted to make Karachi a model city, having both peace and progress. He said that the city government with the help of town and union council leaders had played an important role to keep the city serene and peaceful. He said that though the police was not a part of the city government, as a city nazim he always kept himself in close touch with the police. He said, “I am satisfied that Karachi is peaceful now and the feeling of insecurity, which was the hallmark in the past, is vanishing.”

Earlier, MPA Hameedullah Khan Advocate, UC Nazim Muhammad Ishaque, Abdul Razzaque and others also spoke. —PPI
