KARACHI: LB polls to be held as scheduled, says Farooq

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 11: The deputy convener of the Muttahida Quami Movement’s coordination committee, Dr Farooq Sattar, has said the local body election will be held at all costs. Speaking to various functionaries of the Muttahida at the Khursheed Begum Memorial Hall on Wednesday evening, he ruled out the possibility of the postponement of the LB polls.

He directed the functionaries to make arrangements for the next polls without delay.

“Some conspiratorial elements had a field day when the Muttahida boycotted the last LB election. They are now busy plotting the postponement of the next local body elections to perpetuate their rule over the city government. As part of this conspiracy, our four workers have been killed over the past 15 days. The conspirators are worried about the burgeoning popularity of the Muttahida with the electorate,” he said.

Mr Sattar said the Muttahida would clinch an overwhelming victory in the upcoming local body elections.

The meeting was attended by officials in charge of various Muttahida sectors, members of unit committees, Karachi organizational committee, media committee, publicity and propaganda committee, and others.

Reacting to the press conference of the general secretary of the Jamaat-i-Islami, Munawwar Hassan, the provincial legislators of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement said the Jamaat-i-Islami was unnerved by the prospects of a defeat in the local body elections. They added that the Jamaat was bent upon causing a breakdown of law and order.

“It is well known that the Jamaat-i-Islami got the city government because of the Muttahida’s boycott of the local body elections. The Jamaat-i-Islami also knows that it will face defeat in the next elections. Little wonder, then, that the Jamaat is behind all the rumours of the postponement of the local body elections,” they said, adding that Mr Hassan’s press conference was needlessly provocative.
