KINGSTON, May 9: Skipper Shivnarine Chanderpaul says West Indies must think hard about their approach after losing first two one-day cricket matches against South Africa. “We batted very poorly. It was a decent wicket, maybe a bit slow and we needed to get our heads down,” he said after Sunday’s eight-wicket defeat.
“We need to get through new ball and build partnerships. We have to go away and think about it.” They have little time to recover as third game is in Bridgetown on Wednesday.
West Indies were restricted to 152-7 in a rain-hit second match, losing four wickets in first 15 overs. In Saturday’s opener, they stumbled to 56-3 after electing to bat first, before Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan led a recovery.
South Africa skipper Graeme Smith, who scored a century on Saturday, called the tourists’ second victory “clinical”.
“We bowled well and got it in the right areas and were very disciplined. We kept them under pressure from the word go,” he said.—Agencies
