BANGKOK, May 9: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and his Thai counterpart Dr Thaksin Shinawatra have more in common than their corporate past. They both happen to be the 23rd prime ministers of their respective countries and were born the same year.
These facts were mentioned by the Thai prime minister in his opening remarks at the joint press conference with Prime Minister Aziz on Monday.
Dr Shinawatra, recalling his old links with Mr Aziz when both were in the business sector, announced: “We have known each other for 14 years and were born in the same year.”
He pointed out that none of them had any political aspirations then. At the outset, the Thai prime minister referred to Mr Aziz as ‘my good friend’ just as Mr Aziz did when his turn came.
In a departure from the standard protocol practice, the two leaders met informally on Sunday night at a private dinner even before their official meeting on Monday.
“We have decided to use our personal friendship for the benefit of our people,” Mr Aziz said at the press conference.—Q.A
