India deprive Pakistan of Saarc crown

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, May 8: India edged out Pakistan 2-1 to win the 7th Saarc golf team championship at the Victoria Club, Kandy, Sri Lanka, says a message on Sunday. Pakistan, the defending champions, had managed to enter the final by a technical victory over the hosts.

Pakistan comprised Vaqas Ahmed, Tariq Mehmood and Waseem Rana. Vaqas and Tariq are experienced golfers while Waseem is a new entry.

Tariq Mehmood was superb in his match against G Verma of India who too put up a good show in matching Tariq’s excellence but in the end Tariq emerged winner on the 18th hole.

The match between Vaqas and Jasjeet Singh was also a demonstration of quality golf. But at the end India equalled by winning the second match.

Waseem looked a little dominated by Himmat Rai of India and could not reproduce the game that he had exhibited in the second round on Saturday.

Himmat won by a margin of 3-2 as India completed the win to annex the title for the sixth time.
