Two kids among 3 killed

OKARA, May 7: Two children were killed in accidents, while a man was allegedly shot dead by his enemies here within the last 24 hours. Reports said an eight-year-old student, Waseem Akram of 24-D village, was on his way to school when a speedy car (A-6444) knocked him down. He was rushed to a hospital where he died, while the erring car driver escaped.

In another incident, a rashly-driven tractor (L-6301) hit a rickshaw in which seven-year-old Mansab Ali of Tulli Mar village near Haveli Lakkha was sitting. As a result, the boy died on the spot. The tractor driver managed to escape. Police have registered a case.

In the third incident, Munawwar Ali, who was returning to Bharia village near Basir Pur on his motorcycle along with his friend Muhammad Azhar, was shot dead by his opponents, Farooq, Ghulam Rasool and Pappu.

WATER SHORTAGE: Three villages, 24-2R, 25-2R and 26-2R, have been deprived of canal water for a month due to the faulty electric motors which supplied water for agricultural purposes.

The villages were supplied with canal water through the old lift-irrigation system, but the motors operating the lift had gone out of order for over a month.

A local farmer, Muhammad Asim, told this correspondent that the water shortage had hit their crops as well as the cattle heads. The farmers, strongly protesting over the negligence of the authorities concerned, have demanded rectifying steps.
