KARACHI: LEAs told to produce pesh imam in court

KARACHI, May 6: The Sindh High Court on Friday ordered the LEAs to produce the pesh imam of a mosque alleged to be detained since March 9. The SHC division bench comprising Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Justice Mohammad Sadiq Leghari was hearing the petition of Advocate Ibrahim Rais challenging the detention of his nephew Maulvi Amanullah, a pesh imam (prayer leader) in Baghdadi.

The petitioner’s counsel Sulman Habibullah submitted that Maulvi Amanullah, also a teacher of a madressah in Mauripur, had been picked up on March 9 in presence of his pupils and his whereabouts were still unknown. He sought the production of detainee.

The allegation of detention was denied by Additional Advocate-General Sarwar Khan submitting that the detainee was not in LEA custody.

The court, after hearing the counsel, ordered the respondents to produce the man on May 13.

The court also ordered that DIG operations and DIG of CID appear before the court for personal explanation if the missing man could not be produced on the next date of hearing. — PPI
