KARACHI: Rs16 billion earmarked for over 100 projects

KARACHI, May 6: The city government will spend Rs16.675 billion for undertaking more than hundred development projects during the next fiscal year (2005-06). Of the total amount, Rs8.147 billion will be spent on development of infrastructure. A total of Rs1.25 billion have been earmarked for carrying out development works in union councils and other uplift plans, which have been proposed by the councillors elected against reserved seats of women, minority and labourers.

Besides, an amount of Rs1278.20 million, which the city government will get under the ADP, will be utilized for carrying out a number of schemes related to roads, footpaths, drainage system, and culverts.

Another fund of six billion rupees has been provided under Tameer-i-Karachi Programme for initiating or completing a number of projects during the next fiscal year. The development projects to be implemented under the TKP include roads, flyovers, bridges, water and sewerage lines, besides other schemes relating to solid waste management.

Major development projects include reconstruction of M.A. Jinnah Road using AASTHO technology; construction of I.I. Chundrigar Road; dualization of Habib Ibrahim Rahimtoola Road along with provision of street lights; improvement of Sohrab Goth roundabout (Phase-II) and Rashid Minhas Road; construction of Manghopir Road and installation of street lights; improvement of Shaheed Sibghatullah Road, Hawkesbay Road and provision of electricity; construction of coastal highway; and flyovers at Hassan Square and Sohrab Goth.

The other uplift plans include setting up of an IT university; construction of city library; construction of Aiwan-i-Riffat auditorium; development of beaches; construction of parking plaza; sports complex in Landhi’s Sector 37-D; construction of inter-city bus termini; construction of a fire station in defunct district council, Mehmoodabad, Gulistan-i-Jauhar and Manzoor Colony; upgrading schools into model schools; development of Orangi and Landhi cottage industries; construction and development of Korangi industrial area’s road (from Road 3000 to Road 12,000); construction of roads running parallel to and underneath Liaquat Flyover and installation of signals; drainage system in Manzoor Colony; a sub-way in front of Rafah-i-Aam Society; construction of commercial complexes; improvement of street lights on Sharea Faisal and National Highway (from Jinnah Terminal to Quaidabad), construction of Right-Turn at FTC Flyover; construction of all major roads linking city government offices with town offices; an underpass near FTC Flyover, a housing scheme; construction of Karachi Medical and Dental College and Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (Phase-II), besides, construction of a number of pedestrian bridges in different parts of the city.

Moreover, erection of gates at Super Highway and Hub River Road; setting up an industrial farming estate; reconstruction of Lyari’s football ground and provision of electricity; beautification and provision of electricity at gymnasium hall and karate centre of Kakri, Lyari.

Besides, garbage transfer stations would be set up and in connection with bulk transportation of garbage, landfill sites of SITE, Dhabeji, Surjani Town and Murad Gondal Pass would be further developed.

The projects to be launched on BOT basis include introduction of tramway, setting up of two desalination plants and sewage treatment plant.
