KARACHI: Funds for promotion of scouting pledged


KARACHI, May 5: The City Nazim, Niamatullah Khan, on Wednesday took oath as the chief patron of the City Boy Scouts Association, Karachi Region, at a ceremony held at the Civic Centre. The ceremony was attended by EDO Aijaz Ali Khan, Senior Presiding Officer, City Council Muslim Pervez, Education Adviser to City Nazim Naseem Siddiqui, Col Shah Ali, Khalid Shah and Rehana Afroze besides a large number of scouts and officials.

Awards were also distributed among the scouts winning various positions at the 7th Sindh Camporee held at Larkana. While scarves were presented to Muslim Pervez, Nasim Siddiqui, Syed Khalid Shah, Mohammed Ahmed, Tariq Majeed, Sabira and Rehana Afroze on becoming patrons of the association.

The nazim said Karachi with a population of 14 million had only 12,000 scouts, which was very less. He called upon teachers and students to work for making the scout movement more functional.

He said people were perturbed due to unemployment, terrorism, and law and order problem, and it was everyone’s duty to help them.

He quoted the dictates of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW), according to which it was supreme service to serve people.

He said scouting was an organization of serving the humanity and had come into being for the very objective.

The city nazim announced that funds would be allocated for promoting the scout movement in the next budget.

He called for organising scouts programmes at the city government level and said every scout should induce his friend to become a scout.

He also underlined the need for activating scouting in private schools and involving female councillors in scout programmes.

The EDO Education, Aijaz Ali Khan, said scouts would set up rain emergency centres in the city’s 18 towns. Besides, each scout would get one child admitted to a school for universalizing education.

The City Council’s Presiding Officer, Muslim Pervez, said he himself was a scout in his childhood, and had taken the oath of allegiance to Pakistan and service to humanity. He said trust and honesty were the results of the scout training. He recalled that scouts used to perform traffic control duties during school holidays.

District Secretary Scout Mohammed Taqi informed that 645 scouts of Karachi had attended the 7th Sindh Scout Camporee and won prominent positions in the cultural show, qirat, naat, qawali and other competitions.—APP
