Paintings show opens today

ISLAMABAD, May 4: The 10th exhibition of paintings by Masood A. Khan opens at the Nomad Art Gallery on Thursday. Transcending the material boundaries, Khan paints in virtual and perhaps not so virtual reality.

He has been painting since early ‘90s and has participated in group and solo shows at home and abroad.

The Bangladesh born artist renders with remarkable detail his own regional geography letting it serve as a basis for his style, emotional mood and personal vision.

The self-taught artist seeks to express his personality and perception of existence beyond the material world.

“I learn the rules and then I like to break them. In my paintings, I am able to transcend all matter and boundaries and move into another area.

“I am inspired by nature and like to paint beauty. I say the truth when I paint,” said the painter.

The application of colours did not matter for him, Khan said, adding that it was mostly an experiment.

Director of the gallery Nageen Hyat said, “Khan explores the limits of ink, charcoal and gouach (kind of water colours) in his multi-dimensional surfaces.”

Khan deftly creates an illusion of space layered through the transparent glass surfaces of bottles and vases. The interplay of the transparent and translucent in visual patterns enhances the uncluttered, modern and linear images, she said.

The exhibition will remain open till May 17.
