KARACHI: DHA, EU ink accord on solid waste management
KARACHI, May 4: A ceremony to sign a partnership agreement between the DHA, the European Union, and two cities of Germany and Spain, for setting up a solid waster management plant in the Defence Housing Authority was held at the DHA Creek Club on Wednesday.
The solid management plant, the first of its kind in the country, is being established by the DHA with an EU grant of 6.3 million euro. The ceremony was attended by the consul generals of Germany and Spain, and an EU delegation.
The DHA administrator termed the initiative of setting up the plant a momentous one, saying the DHA was leaping forward to subdue problems of waste disposal and those threatening the environment.
He thanked the German and Spanish governments for their material, technical and academic contributions, and said they would go a long way in furthering the project’s success.
The administrator said that to qualify for the said grant a mutual partnership had been established between the DHA Karachi and two cities of Germany and Spain.
The Project Adviser, Dr Muhammad Yaqoob Chughtai the project would go into full operation in a two years time after which it would be run by the DHA alone.
He added that the project comprised an office complex, a waste processing plant, and a school for educating scavengers and other needy inhabitants.
The German and Spanish consulate generals spoke of the growing economic and friendly ties of their countries with Pakistan which would open new vistas of mutual co-operation and understanding.—PPI
