KARACHI, May 4: Eight suspects for copyright violations were remanded on Wednesday to the custody of Federal Investigation Agency for interrogation by two judicial magistrates. They were arrested on Tuesday by different teams of the FIA, which also seized over 100,000 pirated CDs, video and audio cassettes.

Rasheed Akhtar and Rashid Iqbal, manager and printing manager of a manufacturing unit in SITE, owned by Zubair Motiwala, and Farooq Usman, manager of United Corporation, were given into FIA custody for interrogation till May 7 by a judicial magistrate of district west.

Another judicial magistrate of district central gave Farooq Chhapra, owner of DISTECH, Saleem Ahmed, production in charge of BS Magnetic, Nasir Ali, manager of Suleman and Co, and Salim Merchant and Masood Ahmed Khan, production manager and manager of Multimedia (Pvt) Ltd, into the FIA custody for interrogation till May 9.

According to FIA Director Babar Khattak, the seizure and arrests were affected under the Copyright Act. “Six factories have been shut down and sealed after separate raids,” he said, adding that the government has launched a campaign to enforce copyright law and arrest those involved in the manufacturing and selling of pirated DVDs, VCDs, and computer discs. “The raids will be continued in future as well,” he added.
