Indians asked to declare dowry

NEW DELHI: India’s highest court has asked the government to order all its male employees to declare the amount of dowry they received at the time of their marriage, a newspaper reported on Wednesday. The Supreme Court has asked federal and state governments to ensure that the male employees give a written statement on the quantum of dowry received and whether the assets received were in the name of his wife, the Asian Age newspaper reported. The apex court’s decision follows the failure of laws to prevent the practice of families demanding huge amounts of cash and property as dowry.—AP
