LAHORE, May 1: The four-year-old bay English filly, Carolous Court sprinted to an easy victory in the Indus Dyeing and Manufacturing Cup run over 1200m during the May Day, Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday. This daughter of English sire Vettori out-of-Glascourt, Carolous Court, beat fancied Laser Lass by a big margin of seven lengths, leading all the way home. Tora Bora finished third, another four lengths behind after nosing out Rock The World to fourth position.
In all, seven ran for the race, a class III handicap race, featuring a card of seven events. The winner trained by Shakir Hussain was piloted by jockey M. Hanif. Federal minister for Petroleum, Mr Nouraiz Shakoor Khan, who was the chief guest at May Day Meeting races, gave away the cup to the winning owner soon after the last race.
Sunday’s races were also witnessed by Federal minister of state for health Begum Shehnaz Sheikh and Punjab minister for information technology, Abdul Aleem Khan besides a large number of equine connoisseurs. The May Day Cup, a class IV division I handicap event, was won by the bay English colt, Brummell, who beat Young Emperor by over two lengths.
Baker Lard finished third, a length behind while Gortalocha completed the frame, three-fourth of a lengths further behind. Eleven colts and fillies had contested the event. Jockey M. Hanif excelled among the riders when he ended the day in a blaze of glory, winning four races in-a-row which included two cup events— May Day Cup and the Indus Dying and Manufacturing Cup. Since the departure of jockey Shahid Rehman for London, where he is associated with an English trainer, M. Hanif has become the most sought-after jockey over-night.
However, in the presence of Shahid Rehman, Hanif seldom got good mounts to ride.
