LARKANA, May 1: An alleged highwayman was killed and two passengers were injured when police and outlaws traded fire in the Veehar police area on Saturday night. Some armed men near the Usman Kalhoro village intercepted Akhtar Soomro and Saleem Soomro travelling in a car to Mehar. As they resisted, the outlaws opened fire and injured them.

Hearing gun shots, police rushed to the scene and engaged in firing with the highwaymen.

As a result a highwayman was killed who later was identified as Ali Sher Gadhi while others escaped.

The injured were admitted to the Chandka Medical College Hospital.

MAY DAY: Sindh Minister Altaf Hussain Unar has said that the government under the leadership of President Gen Pervez Musharraf is determined to provide facilities to workers.

He said workers play a vital role in boosting up country’s economy and under the labour laws their rights had been fully protected.

Addressing a public meeting here on Sunday held under the auspices of Watan Dost Mazdoor Employees Federation on the occasion of the International Labour Day, he said the government had increased salaries of low paid employees.

He expressed hope that in the new budget the salaries would also be increased in the interest of low paid employees.

The minister paid rich tribute to the martyrs of Chicago who had sacrificed their lives for the cause of the working class.

He said an inquiry would be conducted regarding the allotment of quarters in the Labour Colony and the rights of workers would be safeguarded at all costs.
