NEW YORK, April 30: The Carnegie Corporation of New York has selected 16 scholars for studying Islam and its relationship with the modern world. Prof Ayesha Jalal of Tufts University, Asma Jahangir of Notre Dame University and Sohail Hashmi of Mount Holyoke College are among the recipients of the scholarship. The programme offers 100,000 dollars for 20 fellowships every year to conduct independent and original projects relating to Islam and Muslim society. Recipients are nominated by the institutions at which they teach. This year’s scholars were selected from the largest number of nominations to date. They represent an array of US universities and institutions, indicating that Islam is an area of study that has wide interest.
