Prisoners get remission

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, April 20: President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday granted special remission to prisoners on the occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi. The president has granted this relief under Article 45 of the Constitution on the advice of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

A notification says special remission of 90 days will be granted to the prisoners jailed for life except those imprisoned for murder, espionage, anti-state activities, sectarianism, Zina under Section 10 of the Enforcement of Hudood Ordinance 1979, robbery, dacoity, kidnapping/abduction and terrorist acts as defined under Anti Terrorism (second amendment) Ordinance 1999.

A 45-day remission has been given to other convicts except the condemned prisoners and those punished under the Foreigners Act 1946.

However, this relief will apply if convicts have undergone two-third of their substantive sentence.

Those convicted in cases processed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), however, would not be entitled to any remission, the notification said.
