Crackdown on PPP activists continues

SHEIKHUPURA, April 20: Detention orders for 63 local PPP activists were issued by the Punjab Home Department on Wednesday. Two activists — Malik Mushtaq Awan’s younger brother Malik Ishtiaq Awan and Shaukat Ali — were taken into custody by B. Division police on Wednesday from Mushtaq Awan’s outhouse.

Sources said PPP leaders and workers would be detained for 90 days under 16 MPO.

The government intends to foil a PPP procession, led by Asif Zardari, to Data Darbar on Thursday (today).

TWO PERISH: Two passengers were killed while more than ten suffered injuries in a road accident on Wednesday near Mandianwala, some 50km away from here on Lahore-Jaranwala Road.

Reports said a Lahore-bound coaster (LRE-6459) in a bid to save a donkey cart fell into a ditch. As a result Aslam and an unidentified person were killed. The injured were removed to Mayo hospital, Lahore.

Sharaqpur police are investigating.

ARMED CLASH: A man was killed while another sustained critical injuries in an armed clash between two rival groups in Kartarpur village near Manawala on Wednesday.

Reports said the groups led by Yaqoob and Maqbool had an enmity over agricultural land. After an exchange of hot words, both the parties traded fire as a result Irshad of Yaqoob group was killed while Tariq of Maqbool group suffered serious injuries.

Manawala police are investigating.

SHOT DEAD: A man was killed while his son sustained serious injuries on offering resistance in Jamil Town on Wednesday.

Ghous and his son Imran were intercepted by bandits. On resistance, they shot dead Ghous and injured Imran.

shifted: As many as 86 PPP activists belonging to the Punjab and Sindh were shifted to Sahiwal jail on Wednesday owing to overcrowding at local jail.

Earlier, they had been shifted from Lahore Camp Jail to Sheikhupura because of lack of capacity.

LOOTED: Four dacoits looted the house of a rice trader here on Wednesday.

Reports said the gangsters entered the house of Noor Ahmad Suraya and took away four guns, gold ornaments and Rs65,000 at gunpoint.

B.Division police are investigating.

STRANGLED: A man strangled his wife Shagufta over a family dispute in Ajnianwala.
