KARACHI, April 19: The continuing clash between two student groups took an ugly turn on Tuesday when a student affiliated with the Islami Jamiat-i-Talaba, allegedly kidnapped and beaten up by the rival student group All Pakistan Mohajir Students Organization, died at a private hospital.

IJT claimed that two students, studying in Government Jinnah Science College, North Nazimabad, were allegedly kidnapped on Monday morning, and later in the afternoon found in SITE town in a miserable condition. They were beaten severely and thrown at an isolated place. The police informed the parents of the two victims and shifted them to a hospital. They were identified as Farhan and Usman.

However, the incident of kidnapping was altogether denied by the newly appointed North Nazimabad Town Police Officer ASP Fayyaz Sumbul. He told Dawn on Monday evening, “No kidnapping took place in my area. It is totally baseless allegation. Nothing has happened.”

About any clash between the IJT and the APMSO, the ASP said it had occurred two days back and not on Monday. “I had a meeting with the students of IJT and nobody has turned up with any complaint,” he said.

The IJT accused the police of favouring the APMSO as according to them the police had refused to register a case of kidnapping against the APMSO.

On Tuesday morning, Farhan succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital. Doctors said that his death was a result of serious injuries to his skull. Farhan, student of first year, was a resident of Metroville.

The death of a student brought a wave of anger among the students affiliated with the IJT in different city colleges and reports of clashes and protests were received from various educational institutions.

IJT students staged protests against the killing of their member. Reports about clashes were received from Karachi University, NED University, and Gulshan campus of Urdu University, National Government College, City Government College, Government Commerce College, and others.

Police said that they had picked up several students belonging to the IJT for creating law and order at various educational institutions.

“We are investigating every individual about his involvement in breach of peace and thereafter cases would be registered against those found responsible,” a senior police official said.

Earlier on Saturday, a clash between the two groups took place in which both the groups alleged for attacking each other. However, the police registered a case against the IJT on a complaint of the APMSO, although the affiliation was not mentioned in the FIR 118/05 in North Nazimabad police station.
