KARACHI, April 17: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has emphasised the need for bringing transparency in the affairs of cooperative housing societies and making them functional. He was chairing a high level meeting held at the Governor House in which matters concerning the cooperative societies in the province were reviewed in detail.
The governor issued directives for computerising all record of cooperative societies along with action against societies which were inactive or existed only on papers.
He said these societies had been given valuable lands for settlement of the shelter less and the same should be utilised in a transparent manner for providing housing facilities.
Dr Ibad said societies showing good performance should be encouraged.
He pointed out that anti-encroachment operation was successfully going on in Scheme-33 and on the average 80 acres of land were being cleared from encroachments daily.
The governor directed that the societies from whose lands the encroachments were removed should be given possession of land and they should be made bound to protect the same from future encroachments.
The meeting was informed that there were 800 cooperative societies in the province and majority of them were in Karachi where 300 societies were functional.
It was stated that as per governor's directives action was being taken against 480 dormant societies.
The meeting was told that various agencies were investigating against eleven societies on charges of irregularities.
It was informed that because of double allotment to eleven societies in the Gulzar-i-Hijri, the possession of land could not be given.
The governor directed that this issue should be resolved at the earliest.
The meeting was also apprised about the Saddar Cooperative Market.
He directed that the project should be given final shape through mutual contacts between concerned persons and organisations under a set time frame.—APP
