Indian envoy’s expulsion sought

By Our Correspondent

NEW DELHI, April 6: A senior aide to Nepal’s King Gyanendra has asked for the expulsion of Indian Ambassador Shiv Shankar Mukherjee, accusing him of instigating politicians against the palace, Press Trust of India said on Tuesday.

India last week welcomed the release of Nepali politicians, including former prime minister G.P. Koirala and it also urged Kathmandu to restore other democratic freedoms that existed before the king clamped emergency rule on February 1.

According to PTI, Bharat Keshar Singh, honorary aide-de-camp to the king, in an interview to a vernacular weekly Janadharana, charged Mr Mukherjee with trying to rally politicians against the palace.

The Indian Ambassador “has no right to gather political leaders,” Mr Singh, who is also the president of the World Hindu Federation, said, accusing the diplomat of trying to create disaffection towards the king.

Citing news reports that Mr Mukherjee hosted a dinner party for various political leaders where he apparently offered his help to fight against the king, Mr Singh said if the reports were true, then he should be expelled from the country for violating the Vienna Convention.
