KARACHI: Power breakdowns cause water shortage in city

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 5: Water supply system of different blocks of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Gulistan-i-Jauhar and parts of PIB Colony was affected badly on Tuesday owing to the non-availability of electricity at different pumping stations of the KWSB for over three hours on Monday. Pumping of water from LSR (Low Supply Reservoir), NIPA and Maskan pumping stations had remained suspended from 7.30am to 11pm on Monday following a major power breakdown that had occurred in the Gulshan-i-Iqbal and other parts of the city.

Sources in the KWSB said that the shortfall caused in the wake of non-availability of power at the three major pumping stations had now been offset and as such all the affected localities would start getting normal supply by Wednesday morning.

CONTAMINATION: Over 100 houses of R category in North Nazimabad’s Block H have been getting contaminated water for the last 15 days.

Residents of the affected locality regretted that although they had lodged a number of complaints about the contaminated water with the KWSB officials concerned, no measures had, so far, been made to rectify the fault responsible for the filthy water they were being supplied for the last fortnight.

Suspecting that sewage water might be seeping into water supply line, they demanded of the KWSB managing director, to direct the officials concerned to immediately remove the fault responsible for contaminated water as they could not afford to purchase private tankers at exorbitant rates for a long period.

BIFURCATION: The KWSB with a view to improving working of its Water Trunk Mains (WTM) department has divided it into two sections to be called as WTM-I and WTM-II.
