Tortured maid loses fingers

By Our Correspondent

RIYADH, April 1: An Indonesian maid who was imprisoned and tortured by her employers in Saudi Arabia had her fingers amputated at a Riyadh hospital on Thursday. Doctors at the Riyadh Medical Complex amputated the gangrenous fingers on both the hands of the maid, Nour Miyati. Amputation of her toes was temporarily put off. It was reported on Saturday that Miyati’s employer, Fahd Naji Al-Dossary, had been arrested and was being questioned by the police.

Whispering hoarsely, the 22-year-old Indonesian housemaid told of the abuse she suffered at the hands of her employer, who beat her when she asked for her salary and locked her up when he left the house. The gangrene ensued from being tightly bound during her month-long bathroom imprisonment.

Miyati, who hails from Sumbawa Island in central Indonesia, had worked for 18 months for the Al-Dossary family for a monthly salary of SR600 — money she never received.

The Indonesian Labour attaché, M. Sugiarto, told the local press here that Al Dossary’s wife was also detained but was let off after questioning.

“The first time she asked for her salary, that’s when it started,” Sugiarto told reporters. “It wasn’t only the man; the wife beat her, too.” She developed gangrene in her hands and feet after being tied up for a month in a bathroom. When the gangrene began to smell unpleasant, the family made her sleep outside the main house,” Sugiarto said. “They locked her up whenever they went out,” he added.
