University students protest against provost

By Our Correspondent

PESHAWAR, March 30: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the People’s Students Federation, Pukhtun Students Federation and Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT) has expressed resentment against the attitude of the University of Peshawar’s provost terming it ‘insulting’ and demanded his removal.

Students of the University of Peshawar, under the banner of the JAC, staged a protest demonstration at Students-Teachers Centre (STC) against maltreatment of students, especially of women students residing in hostels allegedly by Dr Imtiaz Ahmed, the provost of the university.

Student leaders including Jehangir Shah Bukhari, Shakilur Rehman Barki and Nizammuddin, also accused the provost of indulging in corruption and said that they did not want a corrupt provost to look after them.

The students, led by JAC president Jahangir Shah Bukhari, staged a peaceful demonstration against the provost’s attitude on Wednesday morning. The protesters dispersed when Mr Bukhari was arrested by the campus police.

“He is not a student of the University of Peshawar anymore because he had left the Law College in January 2004. He was an outsider disturbing the peaceful environment of campus,” police officials told Dawn on phone.
