Younis, Sehwag top 500-run mark: Kaneria, Kumble highest wicket-takers

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, March 28: Virender Sehwag and Younis Khan were the only batsmen to top 500-run mark in the just concluded Test series between India and Pakistan.

Sehwag, named Man-of-the-Series, aggregated 544 runs at an average of 90.66. Younis, the Pakistan vice-captain who played a pivotal in role in his team’s victory in the final Test with scores of 267 and 84 not out, totalled 508 runs at 101.60.

Apart from Sehwag and Younis, Pakistan skipper Inzamamul Haq scored 401 runs in the three-match series while celebrating his 100th Test appearance with a memorable 184 in the first innings of the Bangalore Test.

On the bowling front, leg-spinners Danish Kaneria and Anil Kumble bagged 19 and 17 wickets respectively. Kaneria, however, upstaged the illustrious Indian by taking each wicket at a better average (31.52 to Kumble’s 37.88) and superior strike rate (60.8 against 77.0).

Shahid Afridi, the mercurial all-rounder, made telling contributions with both bat and the ball in the third Test. His three crucial scalps on the final day of the series catapulted to the top of bowling averages from both sides after his explosive 58 off 26 balls on Sunday put Pakistan in the driving seat.
