LAHORE, March 27: Four-year-old bay colt, Baker Lard, enthralled racing connoisseurs by his magnificent style of running when landing the Ginza Cup during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.
Backed at five to four favourite, this colt from Baker’s Gate out-of-Lady Dunit, Baker Lard, showed his breeding quality by running away with the cup gone over 1200m.
He beat chestnut colt, Gujrati Babu by half-a-length. Bay colt Welcome Boss came staggering seven lengths behind to occupy third place while chestnut colt Running Stage, completed the frame, another two lengths further back. Only ten ran for this sixth race of the card. Jockey M. Hanif rode the winner.
Minister for Railways, Mian Shamim Haider, who was the chief guest at Lahore Winter Meeting watched races and gave away the Ginza Cup to the winning owner soon after the race.
Earlier in the fourth race, chestnut colt, Royal Winner, stormed home to win the Nero’s Dream Cup run over 1200m.
Royal Winner defeated Aya Chandiwala by three lengths, who nosed out Rising Sun to third position. Mera Chandiwala completed the board, another three lengths behind.
In all, eleven ran for this main supporting event. Long shot chestnut colt, Owais Prince in a front-running successful bid won the fifth race, a class four handicap event over 1200m.
He beat Stereo Nation by one-and-a-half lengths. My Own Job finished third with Green Street completing the frame. Joint favourite bay colt Best Trace finished among also ran.
The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards headed by chairman Tariq Aziz, were not satisfied with the running of Best Trace in this race.
They ordered an inquiry into Best Trace’s bad performance and till its completion suspended his rider, jockey Azeem Pervaiz and also stopped entries of Best trace in races.
The stewards also suspended the licence of riding boy M. Jehangir for two weeks for his dangerous riding on Young Emperor in the Ginza Cup race.
The stewards cancelled the second race prior to its running because of anticipated lack of competition in this event. Thus the eight event card was reduced to only seven.
In the seventh race, apprentice Khalid, the rider of joint favourite Happy Moon had a fall from his mount during the race.
However, he escaped unhurt. Jockey M. Hanif excelled among the riders when he sailed home a brace of winners through Empire Maker in the opener and Baker Lard in the feature event. Trainer Mohammad Afzal sent out two winners, Owais Prince in the fifth race and My Shanga In the eighth and last event of the day.
