ACCORDING to the Statement of Affairs of the State Bank of Pakistan, for the week ended March 12, 2005, both notes in circulation and those issued increased in the week. Notes in circulation stood at Rs718,568.101 million against earlier week’s figure of Rs713,601.092 million, a rise of Rs4967.009 million. When compared to the corresponding week a year ago when it was Rs621,075.048 million, the current week’s figure is higher by Rs97,493.053 million. Total notes issued also rose in the current week over preceding week’s level. At Rs718,672.697 million it was larger by Rs4,917.656 million over the figure of Rs713,755.041 million recorded a week earlier. In the corresponding week last year it amounted to Rs621,243.951 million, which shows current week’s figure to be higher by Rs97,428.746 million over last year’s corresponding figure.
Approved foreign exchange rose in the week to Rs490,791.608 million or by Rs12,971.884 million over preceding week’s figure of Rs477,919.724 million. When compared to the corresponding week a year ago, when the figure was Rs526,756.201 million, the current week’s figure was smaller by Rs35,964.593 million.
Balances held outside Pakistan in approved foreign exchange rose in the week under review. It stood at Rs134,990.572 million over preceding week’s figure of Rs130,717.741 million, a rise of Rs4,272.831 million. Compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs110,288.110 million, the current week’s figure is higher by Rs24,702.462 million.
Loans and advances of scheduled banks to the three sectors – agricultural, industrial and export showed a mixed trend in the week under review. The agricultural sector received Rs59,576.437 million similar to preceding week’s figure. The current week’s figure is larger by Rs3,900.898 million over last year’s corresponding figure of Rs55,675.539 million.
There was an inflow of Rs1,262.496 million to the industrial sector during the week under review, similar to preceding week’s figure. When compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs2,512.348 million, the current week’s figure is lower by Rs1,249.852 million.
The export sector received Rs104,721.960 million against previous week’s figure of Rs103,353.549 million, a rise of Rs.1,368.411 million. Current week’s figure was larger by Rs26,851.732 million over last year’s corresponding figure of Rs77,870.228 million.
